Nestled in the charming coastal town of Shimoda, Tsuwabuki Cafe offers a delightful escape for both locals and travelers alike. Located at 913 Suzaki, this quaint cafe stands in a beautifully maintained traditional style house, exuding a warmth that feels like a personal visit to a cherished relative's home.

As you step inside, you are instantly enveloped by the inviting atmosphere crafted by the husband-and-wife duo who operate this delightful spot. Their kind-hearted hospitality and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee create a space that feels both authentic and heartwarming. Customers often speak of their experiences here as more than just a meal; it’s like being welcomed into a family gathering. Steffen Eckart aptly describes it as the perfect choice for a post-coastal walk lunch or coffee break, highlighting the delicious yaki soba fried noodles and comforting omu rice as must-tries.

The reviews reflect a tapestry of fond memories and cherished experiences. Julian Grünewald raves about the cafe's ambiance that feels like visiting long-lost family, where every dish is prepared with love. This sentiment is echoed by Hristo “Itso” Minkov, who praises not only the food but the genuine hospitality that accompanies each meal. The simplicity of the menu does not detract from the quality; rather, it enhances the feeling of home-cooked goodness.

Even in instances where customization is needed, such as for vegetarian options, the owners are more than willing to accommodate. H Faozia shares a touching story about the couple’s extraordinary kindness when they returned her forgotten wallet, further solidifying Tsuwabuki Cafe as a place where customers are treated like treasured guests.

Coffee enthusiasts will also find satisfaction here, with praises for the rich, flavorful brews that complement the comforting menu. Dan describes the cafe succinctly, calling it a “great little cafe” that encapsulates the essence of authentic Japanese experiences.

Whether you’re looking for a leisurely morning coffee, a hefty lunch that warms the soul, or simply a place to unwind and soak in the local culture, Tsuwabuki Cafe promises a heartfelt experience. This is truly a gem in Shimoda, a place where every sip and bite brings you closer not just to delicious food, but to the warmth of genuine human connection.

Even if this wasn’t the only restaurant or cafe in the area, Tsuwabuki Cafe would be an easy choice for lunch or a coffee break after a walk along the coastline. It is located in a beautifully maintained traditional style house, so that you feel like a personal guest of the owner. Try the yaki soba fried noodles or the omu rice. #tsuzaki

We stumbled upon this little gem of a coffee spot, lovingly run by the sweetest elder couple in their own home, and it instantly became one of the highlights of our trip. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, like visiting family you didn’t know you had. The food is cooked with love and tastes just like home — comforting, delicious, and made with heart. The coffee was just as memorable, but it’s the kindness and genuine hospitality that truly made this place unforgettable. Sadly, we couldn’t make it back before leaving, but we’ll return the first chance we get. A place like this stays with you.

Stumbled upon this cafe on a quiet April morning. Two lovely hosts greeted us, I believe they were a husband and wife who own and operate it. The service was great, the atmosphere does not get more authentic, and the food was simple but great as well. A little gem in a quiet fishing village. Highly recommend !

It was a lovely little place owned by a senior couple. They don’t have many “muslim friendly” menus, but the cook was really kind and made me vegetarian pasta. The price is affordable and yummy. And they were really sweet to keep my forgotten wallet, and even brought it to the nearby bus stop. Their kindness really touched my heart. Aside from that, the place is also instagrammable with the antique interior and lovely little garden. Wish I have a chance to come again.

Cute little cafe with lovely owners. They take their time to get your order and prepare excellent coffee and food with lots of love and attention to detail. The cafe is a traditional Japanese house with a lovely garden up front.
